Nokia announced that Java-enabled Series 60 based smartphones will include an enhanced configuration for the Java platform, driving opportunities for significant improvements in remote management of mobile devices and creating new business opportunities for Java platform software developers in the mobile middleware market.

Announced at the 2005 JavaOne conference in San Francisco, Nokia's vision for the next generation of the Java Platform in the mobile space will build the Connected Device Configuration (CDC) into Series 60 based smartphones. CDC provides a more flexible and modular device environment upon which Nokia and other Series 60 device manufacturers can build versatile, powerful Java technology-enabled mobile phones for consumer and enterprise users.

The Series 60 Platform, built on the Symbian OS, is the world's leading smartphone platform. It is licensed by some of the foremost mobile phone manufacturers in the world including LG Electronics, Lenovo, Nokia, Panasonic, Samsung, Sendo and Siemens. Nokia alone had cumulatively shipped 25 million Series 60 enabled devices by end of May 2005.

The next generation Java platform for Series 60 enhances the underlying capabilities of the Java technology found in today's J2ME platform for mobile devices. This, in turn, opens the door to the creation of powerful Java technology-based middleware applications, such as those that will enable operators and network administrators to remotely manage and monitor applications and the device platform. Additionally, incorporating CDC into Series 60 Platform will provide the foundation to enable Nokia and other Series 60 device manufacturers to build next-generation mobile phones that easily allow the addition and customization of functionality after a device has been manufactured and deployed.

"By facilitating wider interoperability and compatibility, the next generation Java platform for Series 60 will enable a greater choice of dynamic Java applications and improved service quality for both mobile consumer and enterprise users, creating demand for more service and device-management middleware from Java developers," said Lee Epting, Vice President, Forum Nokia. "Incorporating CDC into Series 60 platform will provide the foundation for mobile operators to offer more robust applications and compatible devices and increase service usage, while mobile enterprise end-users will experience a dramatic improvement in manageability of applications, better security and overall higher productivity."

An integral component of Nokia's ongoing efforts to improve compatibility of multi-vendor devices through J2ME platform standardization is the Mobile Service Architecture (MSA) initiative. The incorporation of CDC into Series 60 is a cornerstone of Nokia's vision for the evolution of the Java platform in the mobile space, delivered through mid-range and high-range Java technology-enabled Series 60 based mobile devices.

Nokia's vision of the future of Series 60 Java technology includes a platform that features Mobile Operational Management that will be a standards-based, service-oriented, managed and secure computing environment for the Java platform in the mobile space. The implementation of features in Nokia's vision of the future Java platform will be aligned with the specifications currently being defined under JSR-248, the first draft of which is under review, and JSR-249, slated for completion and review in early 2006.

New developer tools corresponding to the next generation Java platform for Series 60 will be made available in 2nd half 2005 by Nokia's global developer support program, Forum Nokia. www.forum.nokia.com/tools .
