Apple has begun selling unlocked iPhone 3G models in Hong Kong, allowing people to use it with any mobile phone carrier. On its Hong Kong website, the Cupertino-based company is advertising direct sales of iPhone 3G, saying people can "buy directly from Apple" and choose their own carrier. The 8GB version was on sale for $5,400 Hong Kong dollars ($695) while the 16GB version costs HK$6,200 ($798).
Apple said the phone can be activated with any wireless carrier.
The iPhone 3G was previously only officially available in Hong Kong bundled with a two-year contract from Hutchison Telecom, even though the device was widely available on the black market.
The move departs from its previous strategy of tying the phone exclusively to specific service providers in 22 nations.
