The long-awaited SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone application will be hitting Apple's App Store in the next 24 hours -- but it will only stream video over Wi-Fi, not AT&T's 3G data network. The software, which lets users relay television shows from their Slingbox set-top boxes to the iPhone, has been restricted by AT&T's strict no-Slingbox policy. So the app will only work over Wi-Fi networks.
Mark Siegel, a spokesman for AT&T said that redirecting a TV signal would consume very large amounts of bandwidth and could potentially impede other customers from accessing the network.
But he did point out that iPhone users have free access to AT&T's 20,000 U.S. hotspots and 80,000 outside the country.
Sling Media, maker of the Slingbox, announced the player in January, however application approval tie-ups have hindered its launch over the past six weeks.
The company said it hopes to continue to work with Apple and AT&T on making 3G transmission a possibility.
SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone will cost $30 -- the same price as previous SlingPlayer Mobile programs for Windows Mobile, Palm OS, BlackBerry and Symbian devices
